As a card game, Exploding Kittens offers fun and laughter with friends. During a pandemic, it may be a little bit harder to meet up, so what better way could there be than play online? An online mode is indeed offered, however, a subscription to Nintendo Online is necessary for each player. This is disappointing, as after paying for the game, not everyone deems it acceptable to also pay to be able to play online with friends. Looking back at the time that it was possible to play online for free on the Wii or even the Nintendo DS, this new development of paying for online services is a thorn in many eyes.

Regardless, the option to play online is there. It sounds good in theory, but in practice each player wanting to play needs a copy of the game. While this is not uncommon with other games, in this instance it may feel annoying considering that usually only one player needs to provide a card game. If the game cost no more than 50 pence, it would be a different story, but as such, it just doesn't really seem worth it when there are other things out there to do online.

The problem for multiplayer continues when looking at local co-op. While the option exists, frustratingly, the other people playing on their own console also need a copy of the game, which again, is just not worth it. Overall, these are very poor options. It is possible to play single-player, and it's possible to choose from different decks as well as different difficulties. However, it is just not very fun to play alone against an AI. There is a tutorial available to explain how the game works, but this has to be found first under 'Settings and More.' The soundtrack is boring and sounds cheap, and the sound effects of playing cards gets annoying after a short while. The design itself is adequate - it is a card game so there is not a lot of wriggle room. It looks alright.

Final Score
Exploding Kittens for Nintendo Switch just is not worth it. It is boring to play alone and it's going to be difficult to find others willing to spend the money to play together. The real-life card game is an absolute hit, but this title for Nintendo Switch is an absolute flop.
